Preparations remain on track for the upcoming IGU Regional Conference in Kyoto, Japan, to take place from 4th to 9th August 2013. The Kyoto Local Organising Committee has announced with great pleasure that the preliminary program is now available on the website (http://www.igu-kyoto2013.org/). Please check the program to confirm the day, time and session of your own presentation. The final program is scheduled to be announced in early June. Although the deadline of registration fee payment for inclusion of presentation (oral/poster) in the program was over, you and your colleagues who will not present at the KRC can still attend the conference by simply paying the registration fee.

The Conference will be focused on one of the central problems of contemporary geography: the combination of traditional and modern knowledge in reaching the objectives of sustainable development at the local and global scale. The venue of the conference – Kyoto, one of the most ancient cities and the former capital of Japan, symbolizes a synthesis of traditions and modernity. I am sure that our hosts will implement this principle in the organization of the Conference which will be based on traditional and new approaches. It will be an excellent occasion for us to get better acquainted with the Japanese geography and geographers and learn more about this wonderful country in participating in field excursions and tours. Abstract submission is now closed and the conference programme will be announced shortly; registration remains open. Find out more at: http://www.igu-kyoto2013.org/

Union Géographique International

2012 Annual Report

The International Geographical Union (IGU)

The IGU was founded under the auspices of the International Research Council in 1922 in Brussels, having been conceived some years earlier in Paris. Its debut as a formal, continuing organization was preceded by ten International Geographical Congresses, the first of which was held in Antwerp in 1871. Early congresses addressed such specific topics as the international standardization of the prime meridian for mapping and agreement on the world’s time zones. In later years up to 1922 the congresses became more general in scope, establishing commissions to address salient facets of geography and cartography. The IGU was established as part of the broader organization of international science that occurred in the early decades of the last century. The IGU was a founding member of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and remains an active member of that organization, in addition to its membership in the International Social Science Council (ISSC).
